All commission work is priced on a piece-by-piece basis due to the unique nature of each project.
I require a non-refundable deposit of 50% of your order quote to confirm a reservation and hold the time for your project on my calendar.
Full payment is due upon completion of your project unless we’ve arranged an alternate payment schedule in advance.
I accept cash, checks, credit cards, PayPal, Venmo and Zelle.

The earlier you get in touch about a potential project the better, and the more likely it will be that I’ll still have openings in my calendar.
At minimum, I recommend contacting me two to three months in advance of when you’d like to have your project completed, especially if it’s something large and potentially complicated. You don’t need to have all your project details worked out prior to scheduling and confirming something with me, just a rough idea of what you’re looking for.
Turnaround time can vary a great deal depending on the size of your project and what other commitments I’ve already booked. Specific start and completion dates will be set when we confirm your project.

Any order that is placed less than 14 days out from the required completion date is considered a rush order. I accept these projects on a case-by-case basis with a 50-100% rush fee depending on the project specifics and the timeline.

I work full time out of my home studio in the Portage Park neighborhood of Chicago. Deliveries and pickups can be done in person pretty much any time as long as we arrange it in advance. I’m also able to receive courier drops and shipments from all major mail carriers with prior arrangement. Completed projects can be shipped nationally, or internationally via USPS, UPS or Fedex for the cost of postage, packaging materials and insurance (if desired).

I firmly believe in the importance of clear communication when designing a custom document or piece of calligraphy/art. The specifics of the design process are always a little different depending on the unique needs of each project, but delivering something truly beautiful and special to you while avoiding any mistakes or unhappy surprises along the way is a core principle to me in all my client work.
I start each project with a ‘research’ phase where I gather as much information as I can related to what we’ll be creating.
This is followed by a draft phase where I do initial rough planning and layout as well as provide samples of scripts, inks, and visual design elements as needed.
Revisions follow the initial draft phase where we align on all the specific details of the project.
Once I’m confident we’re on the same page for the final piece and have your sign off on everything to be done, we move in to the final execution phase where I complete the finished work.

“Scripts” and “hands” are the calligraphic equivalent of fonts and typefaces in typography and design. Calligraphers learn different scripts and hands like you might learn to speak a foreign language.
I am most proficient in traditional pointed pen scripts, but I also offer a variety of broad edge scripts, monoline and block lettering options.
If you have something in mind different than anything you see here, send me a note and I’ll let you know if it’s something I can offer.

You can be as involved or hands off as you like in selecting the specific materials to be used in your project. Either way, I will check in with you throughout the process to make sure we’re on the same page for how your project will come out.
I typically work on high quality, archival watercolor or fine art papers using traditional inks and paints with high lightfastness ratings. For flat and raised gilding I use real 24k gold leaf.
All of these materials have excellent longevity when properly protected, and I am always happy to share recommendations on how to best care for your piece once its completed.

All source texts need to be provided in a single file and in a digital format. Google Docs, Sheets, MS Word or Excel are all acceptable options. I do not accept pdfs, photos, scans or any kind of handwritten text source files.
Any formatting that is important to the text must be included in the provided text file.
I highly recommend you have at least one other person check your file for errors prior to sending it to me. Typos, mistakes and misspellings have a way of always sneaking in. I do my best to catch any errors within provided texts, but things that are obviously incorrect to you may not be so obvious to me, and corrections requested after I've begun work are charged as additional work beyond the scope of the initial project.
